What to expect—and exactly how to support your skin in the first 48 hours
Swelling after laser treatments is completely normal—and in many ways, it’s part of the process.
Whether you’re having BBL, HALO, TRIBRID, or other corrective treatments, your skin is responding to controlled heat and energy designed to stimulate collagen, improve tone, and refine texture.
That response creates inflammation, which shows up as swelling.
The good news: how you manage that inflammation—especially in the first 24–48 hours—directly impacts your recovery, comfort, and overall results.
Why Swelling Happens After Laser
Laser treatments work by creating controlled thermal injury in the skin. This triggers your body’s natural healing response, which includes:
- Increased blood flow
- Activation of immune cells
- Release of inflammatory mediators (including histamine)
This is what leads to:
- Puffiness (especially around the eyes)
- Warmth or redness
- Temporary fluid retention in the skin
This response is expected and necessary—but excessive or prolonged swelling can be minimized with the right approach.
The First 48 Hours Matter Most
If there’s one thing to understand, it’s this: swelling is easiest to control early.
The first 24–48 hours after your treatment is when your body’s inflammatory response is most active. Supporting your skin during this window can significantly reduce how much swelling you experience overall.
What to Do Immediately After Your Treatment
1. Begin Cooling Once You’re Home
Cooling helps constrict blood vessels and reduce fluid buildup.
- Start once you’re home (not before driving)
- Focus especially around the eyes, where swelling tends to be most noticeable
- Use gentle intervals: 10–15 minutes on, 10–15 minutes off
Cryo globes are ideal for this because they stay consistently cool and allow for controlled, even application across delicate areas.
2. Keep Everything That Touches Your Skin Extremely Clean
After laser, your skin barrier is temporarily compromised. This means anything touching your skin—especially tools like cryo globes—must be kept very clean.
- Clean and disinfect tools between uses
- Avoid placing anything unclean directly on the skin
- Use a hypochlorous acid spray (such as Hydrinity) to lightly mist the skin and help maintain a clean healing environment
This step is often overlooked—but it plays a critical role in infection control, while also helping prevent irritation, breakouts, and delayed healing.
3. Sleep Elevated
That first night matters.
- Sleep elevated using 2–3 pillows at minimum
- Ideally, position yourself more upright by creating layered pillow support behind your back to prevent shifting overnight
The goal is to keep your head elevated above your heart. The more supported and elevated you are, the less opportunity there is for fluid to settle in the face—especially around the eyes. Small adjustments here can make a noticeable difference in morning swelling.
4. Repeat Cooling the Next Morning + Night
Continue cooling:
- The next morning before starting your day
- Again that evening before bed
If swelling is controlled during this early window, most clients feel comfortable returning to normal activities quickly.
Supporting Swelling Internally (Histamine Control)
A large part of post-laser swelling is driven by your body’s histamine response. In select cases, your provider may recommend a short course of:
- Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
- Pepcid (famotidine)
This combination works by calming histamine pathways from two different angles, helping to reduce swelling without interfering with collagen stimulation.
Typical short-term guidance:
- Benadryl: 25–50 mg (best taken in the evening due to drowsiness)
- Pepcid: 10–20 mg once to twice daily
These are typically started once you are home after treatment and used for 1–3 days, depending on your level of swelling. Always follow your provider’s specific recommendations.
Arnica: A Smarter Approach to Swelling + Bruising
Arnica is one of the most effective and widely used natural options for minimizing swelling and bruising after procedures—but not all Arnica is created equal.
At Honey, we recommend a more advanced formulation: DermAvance Arnika Forte.
Why This One Is Different
Unlike standard Arnica supplements, Arnika Forte® is a multi-ingredient, physician-formulated recovery blend designed specifically for post-procedural healing. It combines:
- Arnica Montana to reduce inflammation
- Bromelain to support fluid breakdown
- Bioflavonoids and antioxidants to strengthen capillaries and support healing
This multi-pathway approach makes it more effective and predictable than single-ingredient Arnica products.
How to Use It
- Start 1–2 days before your treatment
- Continue the day of and for 5–7 days after
To keep your healing response as controlled and predictable as possible, avoid introducing any new supplements right before your treatment. If you’re currently taking supplements, continue as directed unless your provider advises otherwise.
The Honey Recovery Protocol™ for Swelling
A provider-guided approach to minimizing swelling and optimizing your results after laser treatments.
Step 1: Control Inflammation Early
Begin cooling once you’re home and stay consistent during the first 24 hours.
Step 2: Protect the Skin Barrier
Keep the skin and tools clean using proper hygiene and hypochlorous acid support.
Step 3: Elevate + Support
Sleep elevated with structured pillow support to prevent overnight fluid buildup.
Step 4: Support Internally
Use targeted internal support, such as antihistamines when recommended, to reduce swelling from within.
Step 5: Strengthen Recovery
Incorporate advanced support like Arnika Forte® to help minimize swelling and bruising while supporting tissue repair.
What Most People Get Wrong
Many clients either do nothing and let swelling run its course, or overdo it with products and interventions that irritate the skin.
The goal is not to eliminate inflammation entirely—it’s to control it. Simple, consistent, and intentional care always outperforms overcomplicating your recovery.
The Bottom Line
Laser treatments don’t end when you leave the office. Your results are shaped just as much by how you care for your skin afterward as they are by the treatment itself.
By following a structured, intentional approach—like the Honey Recovery Protocol™—you create the ideal environment for your skin to heal efficiently and deliver the results you’re looking for.
If you ever have questions about your recovery or want guidance tailored specifically to your treatment, our team is always here to help. Because at Honey, we don’t just perform treatments—we guide you through the entire process.
